To support your point of view, I have two non-fiction books to recommend, both of which gave me some understanding of subcultures I knew nothing about: “Outcasts United: An American Town, a Refugee Team, and One Woman’s Quest to Make a Difference” by Warren St. John; and “Just Like Us: The True Story of Four Mexican Girls Coming of Age in America” by Helen Thorpe. The first is based in Clarkson, GA and the second, in Denver, CO.
