I have spent most of my vacations as a working professional visiting friends around the country and the world. I highly recommend it. The advantages of having a local guide and a travel companion are even better than the free accommodations. I have had so much fun seeing the best a city has to offer from a local’s perspective. I have also had a blast exploring and experiencing new things that my friends have never done and may never have done if I had not paid them a visit.
Also, as Lauren and I have started traveling together and to places where we do not have friends we have been using Air BnB a good deal. And if you try to make friends with your hosts you may just end up staying with a friend. We were blessed to have this happen when we went through Auckland, New Zealand. We stayed with Vee, probably the world’s greatest Air BnB host, and became friends. Our stay with her actually became one of the highlights of the trip. We probably spend as much time talking about how awesome our stay with her was as we do talking about the gorgeous sites of New Zealand. So keep your eyes and hearts open to adventure in friendship even as you travel among strangers.
Thanks for adding that, Michael! I love being reminded of Vee :).
