A local gem hidden in the heart of Atlanta

Nestled in the heart of downtown Atlanta, Ponce City Market is one of the largest “adaptive reuse projects” in the area, and was listed in 2014 by Travel + Leisure as one of “The World’s Coolest New Tourist Attractions.”  I got to spend the evening there a few weeks ago, to see if it’s worth all of the hype that it’s been getting.

One of the focuses of Ponce City Market is building community, and they’ve put a priority on establishing a web of pedestrian trails and public green spaces around the fringes of the market.  It also helps that PCM is located squarely in the middle of some of the most vibrant and eclectic areas of the city of Atlanta – the Old Fourth Ward, Virginia Highlands, Poncey Highlands, Druid Hills, and downtown.  Residents and visitors also enjoy direct access to the famous Atlanta beltline from the Market.

The inside of the market is an eclectic combination of specialty coffee places, unique restaurants, and hipster clothing and retail shops.  Here are a couple of my favorites:

  • 18.21 Bitters

A prohibition-inspired shop offering premium bitters, syrups, tinctures, tonic, beer, and craft cocktail mixers to help you craft a better cocktail.

  • Biltong Bar

Organic, all-natural beef jerky, savory hand-held pies, South African wines and cocktails, and of course, air-dried biltong.

  • Collier Candy Company

An old-fashioned candy stores that specializes in hard-to-find sweets.

  • Goorin Brothers Hat shop

    A real-life millinery!

  • Honeysuckle gelato

Aa gourmet gelato shop.  Even the name sounds delicious.Lululemon – a yoga-inspired athletic wear and healthy lifestyle company.

  • Rye 51

Sells luxury men’s dry goods and apparel…also boasts an in-store whiskey bar!

  • Simply Seoul Kitchen

Classic Korean favorites made by an artisan chef.  I’m a sucker for all things Korean ever since I lived there…

  • West Elm

Offers distinctive furniture and decor pieces to spice up every room of your house.

This is by no means an exhaustive list.  Ponce City Market hosts well over 50 restaurants, cafes, and shops – with such a large list and variety of stores, you are sure to find something you love!

The next time you’re looking for something fun and different to do, grab your camera, get dressed up in your best vintage / hipster outfit (trust me, you’ll thank me once you get there), and take a stroll around the shops for a few hours.

Be creative and open-minded – go into stores you would normally pass over, talk to people you would normally ignore.  You might just find a treasure you weren’t expecting, and you’ll surely find a fun, unique afternoon excursion.
